Reflecting on today's tutorial - 20/10/2022

Reflecting on today's tutorial Daisy Jackson / 20/10/2022 Today's session we had group tutorials with Matt and Molly reflecting on the work we have done on our blogs. There was genuine good feedback, however, Matt and Molly both agreed that the Barbara Kruger tryouts were very bold and the drawing contrasted too much with the red text. Molly mentioned how it would be great if I used my own handwriting in the drawing too which I did agree with. I tried these ideas out: I first tried out changing the red colour for something that blended in nicely with the background but still stood out. This colour change was more complimentary to the drawing and was easier on the eye. I also decided to play around with moving the text so it didn't cover the horse as much. I then experimented with my own handwriting like so: I really love this style instead as it is more subtle and effective. It feels more powerful with the contrast and I love how it overlaps the drawing of the horse. It als...

Purchasing a card reader for December - Zettle - 19/10/2022

Purchasing a card reader for December - Zettle Daisy Jackson / 19/10/2022 Here is just an update post reflecting on the results of my survey. Due to there being a mix of the audience wanting to pay via card and cash, I decided to purchase a Zettle card reader. Here is the card reader: This Zettle card reader will be extremely helpful for when I sell my work as it causes for flexible payments. The app I have on my phone will allow me to keep track of the money I have earned and can actually allow me to add my products into the app for easy access! I am very excited to use this.

Trying out the style of Laughing Mule's work - 19/10/2022

Trying out the style of Laughing Mule's work Daisy Jackson / 19/10/2022 As my main intention is to use my cricut machine for this project, I decided to try out the style of Laughing Mule but through cricut and not linocut - their main medium. I wanted to capture the relationship between Joey and Topthorn in a style similar to Laughing Mule. Laughing Mule often focuses on positive and negative space in their work as well as zoom ins on particular features of horses - I wanted to replicate this in my own way. Here are my drawings I created in Procreate: The first drawing is a different position of the two horse noses. The second and third drawings go together which I will experiment through adding two different vinyls on one shirt/card. With these pieces, my main intention was to transfer them both onto cards. However, I realised the only vinyl I currently have (until the weekend) is smart iron on vinyl which is only used for materials. This is no issue as I can still test out the de...

Trying out Cricut for cards - 18/10/2022

Trying out Cricut for cards Daisy Jackson / 18/10/2022 Due to having problems regarding material for mass producing T-shirts (which I will rectify), I decided to try out the transfer paper and try and transfer a design of mine onto paper. This is the process I will be doing whne creating cards and prints! Here is my process: This was my design cut by the Cricut machine onto the vinyl.  I the used transfer tape for the vinyl to stick onto. The tutorial I watched told me to press the transfer tape onto my clothes a few times before applying to the vinyl as this reduces how sticky it is. This is the vinyl design stuck onto the trasnfer tape. I flattened this with one of the utensils provided in the essentials kit so the design stuck fully onto the tape. I peeled the vinyl off it's original backing and onto the transfer tape.  This is my finished design printed onto paper! I am so happy with the result of this as it looks professional and can be mass produced. I also love the text...

Replicating Barbara Kruger's art - 17/10/2022

Replicating Barbara Kruger's art Daisy Jackson / 17/10/2022 Experimenting with different artist's approaches is really helpful when it comes to idea generation. I really loved the idea of playing around with word play and decided to try this in a Barbara Kruger style.  Here are my original drawings of Warhorse (unedited): Due to Barbara Kruger's work being mostly in black and white followed by red text/borders, I thought it would be great to start off with a black and white drawing of Warhorse (which I took from the main poster). This appears more dramatic and fits the general presentation that Kruger creates in her own work.  I also included a version of the drawing with red in the background which I am quite fond of.  I created this digitally as I thought I could have more fun with it especially when it came to experimentation. I used a variety of paint brushes on Procreate which really complimented the piece as well as enhancing it.  I then edited the drawing: Bec...

Trying out prints with Cricut - 17/10/2022

Trying out prints with Cricut Daisy Jackson / 17/10/2022 In the future, I want to make my own art prints as well as other merch. So this project is perfect to experiment further with that. After analysing the results of the survey, it was evident that T-shirts were a main contender for what to sell. Due to this as well as my future ambitions, I purchased a Cricut machine. This way I can make my own prints and sell them. I can also print onto cards and so on. Because I have not got any Warhorse themed designs yet, I decided to choose my own designs to try out on a T-shirt. I ran through several problems along the way and still have not created a perfect finished result. However, the two attempts I have made so far have allowed me to understand what I did wrong and what I can do better next time. Here is my first attempt: The main issue I realised was that the type of fabric I have used for the T-shirts are 100% cotton. I did some searching and found that polyester is more absorbant. I a...

Creating a survey for my target audience - 14/10/2022

Creating a survey for my target audience Daisy Jackson / 14/10/2022 During the session yesterday with Matt (13/10/2022), we discussed target audience. Despite already thinking of a particular target audience, I did not fully research into what my target audience likes/wants. I am still sticking with my chosen age of 10+ as at the Decemeber fair, adults may be accompanied by children or wish to purchase products for their children. To further research into my target audience, I conducetd an online survey which was sent out via a link. I will be conducting another survey when actually creating these products as I want my target audience to choose which designs/colour choices etc they like the best. This will guide me into my final outcome. Here are the results: Q1 analysis: For this question, I wanted to see the age of my target audience. This just roughly guides me into knowing the age range and the likeliness of the different ages purchasing my products. From this I can conclude that t...
