Replicating Barbara Kruger's art

Experimenting with different artist's approaches is really helpful when it comes to idea generation. I really loved the idea of playing around with word play and decided to try this in a Barbara Kruger style.
Here are my original drawings of Warhorse (unedited):
Due to Barbara Kruger's work being mostly in black and white followed by red text/borders, I thought it would be great to start off with a black and white drawing of Warhorse (which I took from the main poster). This appears more dramatic and fits the general presentation that Kruger creates in her own work.
I also included a version of the drawing with red in the background which I am quite fond of.
I created this digitally as I thought I could have more fun with it especially when it came to experimentation. I used a variety of paint brushes on Procreate which really complimented the piece as well as enhancing it.
I then edited the drawing:
Because Kruger's work is often dramatic text wise, I wanted to capture what Joey went through during the whole book - fear. He was often battling himself and being put up against things he did not want to experience. This possibly created a very confusing and toxic mindset for him which explains the reasoning behind the text 'THE WAR WITH THE MIND'.
Horses are also known to represent courage and freedom. The added text contradicts this as Joey is indeed not free - especially from his mind.
I then edited the drawings further in a range of ways similar to Barbara Kruger:
With these edits, I experimented with a range of features on Procreate to recreate similar approaches made by Barbara Kruger to her own work. I am really happy with the results of these as they are exactly how I wanted them to look. The contrast between both sides split in two as well as the 'trippy' edits really fits well with the dramatic appearance the piece creates.
My favourite edit:
I noticed that Barbara Kruger tends to have a 'grainy' effect on her work which I love. It adds more personality and texture to the piece which I wanted to replicate. This piece does exactly that and has so much contrast colour wise I love it! It communicates exactly what I want to do and could potentially seeing this as a print or something similar.
