Reasoning for each design and relating it to Warhorse

Daisy Jackson / 20/11/2022

On this blog post I will be going through each of my final designs and briefly explaining how they relate to Warhorse.

Joey was sold for £40 in a horse auction. I wanted to represent the relationship between Joey and Albert and label him as 'priceless' because to Albert, he is priceless.

This was a very important scene from the book/movie. The breed of horse that Joey is, he cannot typically plough the fields. Albert's family's farm depended on this scene as if Joey failed to do this, then everything would be taken away including Joey. This is a very straight forward design but represents a large character development from several characters.

Intertextuality - referencing Family Guy's famous scene 'Peter the horse is here'. I decided to create a spin off saying 'Albert your horse is here' because constantly throughout the book and movie, Albert would find himself saying 'that's my horse'. This would also interest a lot of the younger audience who are familiar with Tiktok trends and so on. It can also interest Family Guy fans. To make this even more unique, I altered the setting and characters and turned them into the characters from Warhorse.

Matt mentioned how it would be interesting if you set your book in a different environment such as space and so on. I decided to set Warhorse on the beach on holiday. The text references Warhorse within.

A sweet card referencing the strong relationship between the two main horse characters Joey and Topthorn.

Once again a design featuring Joey and Topthorn but replicating the style of Laughing Mule's linocut work. This focuses on the two horse noses and captures an interesting take on positive and negative space. Very stylised and eye catching.

Developed from the 'Priceless range' so maintaining that consistency. A positive card that you could buy someone saying they are priceless, like Joey is to Albert (and Topthorn).

A further spin off on the 'Priceless range' and referencing the horse auctions. This one is a more negative and funny card but an interesting alternative to the others as it makes fun of the individual more.

A silhouette of Albert and Joey. Very dramatic but captures the relationship well. Can interest horse lovers and is generally a nice and straight forward design that contrasts nicely to my others.

Captures Joey and Topthorn, two alternative styles. One being a silhouette and the other taking on a more stylised approach inspired by Laughing Mule's work.

The common theme throughout all these designs is relationships. This is something I really wanted to focus on when creating these designs and researchign more into Warhorse.
