Visual note taking on chapters
Daisy Jackson / 11/10/2022
To carry on with my visual note taking, I chose key chapters to create illustrations and general ideas on. I chose particular chapters as some focused more on what I wanted to visualise.
This as well as having the movie to assist me, I am slowly generating more ideas on what I want to create as well as the intended end result.
Chapter 2:
Again, I love the idea of word play and experimenting with quotes from the book/film. In this case, 'earn his keep' was something I was drawn to as this determined what would happen to Joey. This was a very emotional chapter for both Albert and Joey as they both worked together as a team to plough the fields despite everyone not thinking it was possible.
Chapter 3:
During this chapter, Albert and Joey's relationship strengthened. However, Albert's father needed the money to save his family and the farm. As a result, he took Joey from the stables without Albert knowing. As well as this, the fields that were ploughed in chapter 2 were pointless as the weather ruined the crops. This prevented them from selling them and earning enough money to pay the landlord back what they owed.
Chapter 4:
At this point the war had started. Albert's father sold Joey in town for £40 to a soldier. This was an important chapter as in this chapter, Albert and Joey were seperated. I remember Albert's father saying to the mother that they needed the money, in response she said 'it's not what you did, it's how you did it' and this line has stuck out to me. Albert even offered himself to join the army despite being too young. This shows how powerful their relationship is as Albert was willing to risk his life just to be with Joey and leave everything behind.
Chapter 7:
I chose this chapter to look at as it shows the development of Joey and Topthorn's relationship. They made it through the summer as a result of Joey's bravery. If it wasn't for Joey, they both could have been killed as they were marked as useless by the German's. That is, until they proved that they could help around the camp and actually pull cannons etc.
