Breakout activity - visual note taking
Daisy Jackson / 03/10/2022
Unfortunately I am currently unwell which meant that I could not attend today's lecture. However, I still viewed the powerpoint and decided to take part in one of the breakout activity tasks. I did this because I am not confident in my visual note taking skills and wanted to be prepared for when I view the audiobook for my project.
For this task, we were given links to several audios. We were told to make a mixture of visual notes while listening to them
Click on the images below to be taken to the video with the audio.
Audio 1:
My own visual note taking:
I also find human features to be present in the imagery as a lot of emotions can be present in them. Take the eyes for example. You can tell how somebody feels by just looking at them. In this case, I decided to draw an eye that seemed almost in pain and crying as I felt as though the audio was quite dramatic and reflected this very well. This also alligns with the world ending as it felt like a build up in a movie. After drawing this, I then thought of death of course as this fits in with the 'world ending.' That is when I decided to draw a cigarette. You could argue this could be the last drag before the inevitable.
I feel like word associations are very important. I just wrote whatever came to my mind. This included words like 'run' and 'never ending' which was accompanied by a forest. The music was very dramatic and in my mind I imagined a character running for their life through a never ending amount of trees.
Audio 2:
My own visual note taking:
The words that accompanied the visual note taking were quite straight forward too but also accurate to what the music was presenting. I felt that the main emotion was isolation as even the image on the video itself reflected this. The long corridor in the image that seemed never ending, created the feeling of being alone which is then accompanied by doubt as it makes you question whether you're actually alone or if somebody is there with you. Along with this, I thought of darkness which then led me to drawing the moon. Often with horrors there can be mythical creatures such as werewolves so this made my mind jump to a full moon.
Once again I have noticed that I have included a human hand an eye. Both of these human features reflect accurate body language which can tell the viewer how the individual is feeling. I wanted to black out the hand as this creates the impression that it is a shadow.
Audio 3:
My own visual note taking:
This audio was completely different to the previous two. The general emotions created when listening to the music was the opposite and was quite an optimistic sound to hear. Instantly I thought of the beach and going on holiday. This was then followed by the sunset along with having an ice cream. The ice cream melting then led me to think about seagulls which constantly steal your food. I then also included the passport and the hotel which often has a swimming pool. All happy memories.
As for word associations, I thought of cliches such as 'warm', 'happy' and 'memories'. Despite these emotions being straight forward and to the point, sometimes that is all it takes when listening to particular music.
I noticed that I did not incldue any human features this time. I feel like this is because I often associate human features with distress as it is more dramatic in art and interesting to me.
How did I find visual note taking?
I found it quite helpful in terms of getting my brain to think more visually. I feel like we see imagery way more than we believe when we hear music, but instead we just make word associations.
It definitely allowed my imagination to wake up as I was thinking of story lines especially with the first audio. This will be helpful for me when I tackle the project and listen to the audio of my chosen book.
